Made to be seen

Hi, I’m Sarah.

I’m a jeweller, teacher and lifelong maker — although for a long time, I never thought of myself as creative at all.

I couldn’t draw particularly well. I couldn’t paint. Creativity seemed to belong to other people.

Then I discovered jewellery making.

Working with metal made sense to me in a way that drawing never had. I realised I thought in three dimensions — through shape, texture, movement and touch.

Jewellery became a language I hadn't known I could speak.

And it changed everything.

Making became more than making

I came to jewellery during a period of significant ill health, when life had become smaller and much less certain.

Working with my hands gave me somewhere to put my attention.

There was something wonderfully grounding about taking a flat piece of metal and slowly transforming it: sawing, hammering, forming, firing, polishing.

For a while, making was therapy.

Then it became curiosity.

Then a practice.

Eventually, it became my life's work.

Today, Sarah Munnings Jewellery brings together the things that matter most to me: making, storytelling, connection and helping people see what they are capable of.

Jewellery with a story to tell

I make jewellery by hand in Melbourne using traditional silversmithing and enamelling techniques.

Every piece begins with simple materials — often a sheet of silver or copper — and is worked slowly by hand.

You’ll see texture, hammer marks, colour and the traces of the making process in my work.

I don't believe beauty needs to be perfectly polished or identical.

In fact, I’m far more interested in the small differences.

The unexpected firing mark in a piece of enamel.
The texture left by a hammer.
The unevenness that tells you a pair of hands made this.

My collections are influenced by the Australian landscape, native flora, colour, old objects, fragments of history and those tiny details in the world that are easy to walk past.

I make jewellery for people who notice those things too.

Pieces with personality. Pieces with stories. Pieces made to be seen.

From my hands to yours

There is an intimacy in handmade objects that I don't think mass production can reproduce.

Someone imagined the piece.

Someone chose the material.

Someone held it, shaped it, changed their mind, tried again and finished it.

Then someone else chooses to wear it.

I love that connection between maker and wearer.

Sometimes the meaning is mine when I make the piece. Sometimes the person who wears it gives it an entirely new story.

Both matter.

My hope is that when you choose one of my pieces, it feels less like simply buying jewellery and more like finding something that somehow feels like you.

The studio is my library of practice

Teaching became an unexpected but incredibly important part of my creative life.

Over the years, my studio has become what I think of as the library of my practice.

It holds tools, experiments, samples, mistakes, half-finished ideas and years of accumulated knowledge.

And I don't want that knowledge hidden away.

I believe skills become more valuable when they are shared.

That is why my workshops are designed to make jewellery making feel approachable — especially for people who arrive believing they aren't creative.

You are allowed to get things wrong.

You are allowed to experiment.

You are allowed to make something simply because you are curious about what might happen.

There is a wonderful moment I see again and again in classes: someone looks down at the piece in their hands and realises,

I made this.

That moment never gets old.
